Employee Retention
Getting employees to stay put at a company long-term is no easy task. Nowadays, employees don’t have the same sense of commitment to a job that they once did. They would prefer to move around as they see fit, whether it be because they want to change locations, totally
change fields, or pursue better opportunities. So companies have to work extra hard in order to invest in their employees and give them a sense of wanting to stay. Well, luckily there are some pretty basic ways to do this.
The first thing is that on-boarding is oh so important when it comes to engaging new employees. When someone is signing onto your team you want to make sure to stay connected so that they actually show up on the first day. once that has been accomplished, you want to be clear and thorough with them so that they do not feel lost and so that you can rest assured that they fully understand everything that they are responsible for. Being attentive with new employees gives them a sense of belonging during a strenuous and difficult period of transition. A familiar feel during this time of stress will pull them towards the company more.
Mentorship programs are also great when it comes to keeping employees engaged. At the beginning, it gives them someone to show them the ropes and ask questions to that they might be too embarrassed to ask other employees. As time passes, these mentors can become increasingly valuable as the relationship continues to develop between the two. It provides the employee with someone to help them do good work. But more than that, it gives them someone to help guide their career path. By showing them what’s important and how to get ahead, your mentors can train the future leaders of your company. Well worth the investment!
Lastly, invest in team building exercises. Nothing says retainment quite like happy employees, so making them feel at home at work is a good way to make sure that they are comfortable and not looking to leave the nest. When employees feel closer then they are more likely to look forward to work and less likely to want to use their vacation time. Also, they are more likely to feel comfortable consulting with or collaborating with employees. So what this translates to is more brains working on your company’s projects, really getting a multi-disciplinary approach and a more well-rounded way of thinking. So your work output will be better because there is more thought and consideration being put into it. The benefits keep on going when you consider just how great it can be to invest a bit of time and energy into team building exercises. And don’t forget seminars and professional development courses, which can also serve as a way to strengthen the team while strengthening their knowledge at the same time.
